A Call to Action for Mattress Recycling in Rutherford County Tennessee
In recent years, Rutherford County, Tennessee, has faced significant challenges in its recycling efforts. Despite the growing awareness of environmental issues and the importance of recycling, the county’s recycling infrastructure has struggled to keep up with the demands of its residents.
Rutherford County currently operates several recycling centers, but they have limited hours and strict rules about what can be recycled. For example, bulk items such as mattresses, couches, and other large furniture pieces are only accepted on certain days and at specific locations [1]. This has led to frustration among residents who want to recycle but find it difficult to do so due to these restrictions.
Moreover, the county’s single-stream recycling program, which accepts paper, plastic, aluminum, tin cans, and glass, is still in its pilot phase [2]. This means that many residents are not yet fully aware of the program or how to participate in it effectively. The lack of widespread education and outreach about recycling options has further hindered the county’s efforts to improve its recycling rates.
However, there is hope on the horizon. Recently, there has been a movement within the community to push for better recycling infrastructure and more comprehensive recycling programs. Local organizations like Recycle Rutherford are dedicated to promoting public participation in recycling and waste reduction programs [3]. These efforts are crucial in driving change and encouraging more residents to take part in recycling initiatives.

Who is SpringBack and Why Do We Recycle Mattresses?
SpringBack Mattress Recycling is dedicated to reducing waste and promoting sustainability by recycling old mattresses. Our mission is to provide an environmentally responsible solution for disposing of mattresses, which are often difficult to recycle due to their size and materials. By breaking down mattresses into their component parts, we can divert a significant amount of waste from landfills and give these materials a second life.
SpringBack receives mattresses from various sources, including retailers, universities, hotels, government institutions, and individuals, creating an alternative to landfills. When the mattresses arrive, a technician will disassemble them. We then separate the foam, steel, cotton, and felt, and place each material in its own material bailer. Once bailed, the recycled materials are sold to their respective material buyers. Following that, each material is repurposed into well-known products such as carpet underlay, insulation, and new metal goods.
SpringBack can recycle over 90% of each mattress and box spring received. This process gives new life to old materials that would otherwise occupy valuable landfill space. We strive to create an environment that enables each employee to be a part of a high-functioning team. Our employees gain essential work experience concerning managing people, processes, and time. Additionally, each SpringBack location is partnered with a non-profit organization that can support workers holistically, providing invaluable support as they “spring back” into society.
Currently, there are four SpringBack locations resulting in jobs for over 20 men. SpringBack recycled over XX million pounds of material in 2024 alone.
